Mark joined the Tax Technology team at PwC in 1999 supporting the tax practice and developing solutions around automating their work, making them more productive and giving them back valuable time.

Much of Mark’s time at PwC has seen him at the helm of development and change. In twenty years, he has seen it all and he is only too happy to pass on his knowledge.

“I find these events great for sharing tips and tricks,” he says. “I have gotten some invaluable ideas from previous meetings.  I remember the Q1 meeting last year where Ian Baldwin from The Information Lab Ireland shared some excellent tips on documenting workflows and best practices. It was excellent.”

Why Alteryx?

The path to Alteryx started in 2016, when he and his team started working with Data Visualisation software.

“Things then started to move quickly,” he says. “Within a few months, we started training our tax users on data and analytics tools; helping them visualise their data to get actionable insights.”

As they got more involved, users began to feel the pain and frustration with the amount of work needed to get data into a clean format before it could be properly visualised.

“Around the same time, there was a lot of talk in the PwC network about how Alteryx was solving these issues,” says Mark. “So the following year, our team embraced Alteryx and it became the real game changer. It allowed users do what they would have previously needed to go to specialist teams for.”

“To be honest, I use Alteryx because it’s fun and interesting,” he says.  “Work I would have previously done in Visual Basic in Excel is now much easier and much quicker in Alteryx. At next week’s event, I will be talking about that digital transformation that is happening in PwC. I’ll explain how we are upskilling all our partners and staff in tools like Alteryx, to increase efficiency, improve accuracy and find additional insights, while at the same time, building a more engaged workforce. Alteryx really makes solving complicated data issues easy and that’s something worth talking about.”

Open Data Story

Mark will be joined on the day by The Information Lab Ireland’s Dave Pansegrouw and Kevin Lynch who will discuss the recently launched Open Data Story project and how the data community can help.

We look forward to seeing you on the day.
