Reset Keep Only in Tableau

The Information Lab Ireland is the leading provider of Tableau and Alteryx training in Ireland. Last week,  we looked at drilling down quickly into your data using the Keep Only feature in Tableau. This week we want to show you how to get out of it and go back to the start and again it’s really rather simple. We will show you how to do this in Desktop and in Tableau Public too.

So we have selected the marks we want to drill down into.  In this case, there are twenty marks or so. At this point, you will see there is nothing in the Filters shelf but when we click on Keep Only in the pop up, it will automatically create a filter under Customer Name.

Now all we have to do to get back to the beginning is simply drag the pill Customer Name out of the Filters Shelf and voila, as they say in Iceland, we are back to where we started.

Alternatively, you could simply use the ‘step back’ arrow or use Ctrl + Z to bring you to where you were before. This will take you back one step at a time.

The same great Keep Only feature also exists in Tableau Public. In this instance you will need to use the ‘reset arrow’ on the bottom right of the viz to get back to the beginning and recommence drilling.
